Guys. When I'm charged $15 for one piece of toast with TINNED baked beans, a few pieces of spinach and then an additional $3 for a quarter of an avocado, I really can't give any higher than 2 stars. Coffee was ok, service was ok, just really can't get over the tinned baked beans.

The top of Bondi Road is yet to undergo the cafe/wine bar explosion that is happening closer to the beach. The arrival of The Flying Squirrel, Corner House and The Beaver have replaced Bondi Road's plethera of takeaways and mini-marts providing locals with great bars and restaurants away from the crowds of Bondi Beach.
While the bars and cafes are slowly creeping up Bondi Road, there's still a lack of selection further up the road - with the exception of Katipo.
Nestled between second-hand white goods stores and "greasy-spoon" style takeaways at the Waverley end of Bondi Road, Katipo is a laid back cafe/bar offering a Mediterranean-style menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as great coffee and cocktails after dark.
From the eclectic mis-matched furniture to the menu's pasted into the pages of classic children's books and the walls adorned with art, it's easy to see how this hip oasis became a local favourite.
The extensive breakfast menu runs all day and the lunch and dinner tapas menu showcase the Mediterranean flavours with clear influences from Spain, Morocco, and Cyprus and there's even some Wagyu skirt steak thrown in.
The food is all sustainable, the coffee (Morgan's) is fair trade and the art initiative, that enables local artists to show and sell their work, is a nice touch. By day or night, Katipo has nailed laid-back comfort in the most unlikely of locations. -

OK I know it's a big call, I know not everyone will agree with me, I know I haven't been to every café in Sydney (yet...) but I'mma say it anyway. Katipo is the best café in Sydney. The staff are welcoming, the shop is comfy, food is prepared with love and the coffee is divine.
Katipo's philosophy on food is that the palette should never be over-stimulated. So when they prepare a dish it uses simple but complimentary ingredients and I swear, every bite of everything I have ever tried there has been ah-mazing! They have a special omelette every day and the tapas is to die for- the haloumi and garlic potatoes are two of my favourites. They claim to only use premium ingredients and the proof is in the flavour. Which does show in the prices but you are paying for taste-bud sex also so it's worth it.
In the few years since opening Katipo has got itself a liquor licence and become a gallery with proceeds going to charity, and they have tapas and live music or DJ from Weds-Friday til late. This is no eat & run place, with comfy couches, great music and Wi-Fi all welcoming patrons to sit around, shoot the shit and drink coffee all day long. I heart Katipo! -

now living in NYC but if I could pop this cafe in a envelope and post it to my hood I would! My very favorite in Sydney.
Go there today and chillax with your lovely host Ben.
